GIVE FINANCIALLY

The Explanation

One of the ways we can play our part as a follower of Jesus is to practise generosity. Ultimately this is based on the fact that we are asked to imitate God in how we live. God gave his very best for us, as demonstrated in the following words from the Bible.

John 3:16 (NIV) - “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

If God chooses to give His best for us, we, too, should practise a life of generosity.

Let’s explore a few more Bible passages before considering how we should practise generosity.

2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (NIV) -Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Psalm 24:1 (NIV) -The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

Malachi 3:10 (NIV) -Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

Matthew 6:19–20 (NIV) - “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

The Practice

  • Prayerfully set aside a certain amount of money each month, aiming towards a tithe (10% of your income).

  • It is better to start somewhere if you are not ready to give 10%. Remember, this is not compulsory or by coercion, but rather it is a way we can play our part in being a disciple of Jesus and is an expression of our worship.

  • Set up a standing order for regular giving or make a one-off donation here.

  • Don’t make a show of what you have given but rather keep it private.

  • Trust that God will bless what you have freely given.
